Skin Analysis
Detailed Assessment of your Skin
To assess the condition of ones skin and the degree of degeneration that has occurred, one should first wash ones face vigorously 2 or 3 times with mild soap and water or a foaming facial cleanser. This will remove all traces of any oily products or residue and the skin will be seen in its bare and natural state.
Clinic Analysis
The best assessment is then made with a specialised high resolution skin camera which includes UV photography. The American Canfield Visia System® is currently the best such equipment available.

Other areas to look at carefully are areas under constant strain or pressure from movements and muscle activity such as the skin of the lower cheeks around the mouth corners, the skin above the upper lip and the area of the expression muscles of the upper face such as the frown, forehead and crow’s feet areas.
When the skin in these areas is very youthful, it has the consistency of a thick, firm rubbery sheet and although lines will form with extreme facial movements, they will immediately ‘bounce out’ and be invisible when the face is at rest.
Even with modest degrees of collagen and elastin loss in these areas, due to the forces constantly exerted on the skin, the skin will start to ‘give’ or ‘fracture’ at weak points and lines and wrinkles will start to become apparent when the face is relaxed.
This a warning that the aging process is underway and these lines will progressively deepen, often quickly in these areas, as the years go by and the skin becomes thinner, weaker and less elastic.
Finally, concentrate on the rest of your face paying particular attention to areas of intense sun exposure such as the forehead, nose, upper cheeks, scalp, if there is any hair loss and the tops of the ears.
Look for any abnormality of skin texture, colour or pigmentation and feel for any rough or scaly areas. These may represent signs of DNA damage and abnormal cellular activity and any unusual pigmented, scaly or other abnormal patches may represent pre-cancerous or even cancerous abnormalities.
Any such suspicious areas should be examined by a doctor. Any abnormality which scabs and refuses to heal, or even bleeds without reason is likely to be a skin cancer and must be examined urgently.
Mole cancer (melanoma) is very dangerous and can kill unless caught very early so regard any abnormal pigmented areas with particular suspicion.
If you are at all uncertain about any skin abnormalities that you may have, please ask for our advice when you attend the clinic.

Home Analysis
Before your appointment, and to gain an initial impression, at home, of the state of aging of your skin you can visually inspect it in front of a mirror using harsh side or overhead lighting.
Mirrors are often lit to give flattering, softened, front-lighting which masks the real state of our skin. However to see the skin in detail, turn off these kind of lights off and light your face harshly from above or the side to clearly see the detailed 3D surface contours.
Look especially at areas of the face where the skin is naturally thinnest such as under the eyes. These areas are likely to show the signs of aging first, as even loss of a small amount of dermal thickness, strength and elasticity in these areas will be significant.
